Meet the Grim Sweeper

My name is Chris Horner and I've been an avid metal detecting enthusiast for over 15 years.

Whilst enjoying my hobby, I realised that a lot of people have an interest in metal detecting but have no idea where to start.

I founded Grim Sweepers CIC to show you how to enjoy this amazing hobby safely, correctly & legally.

Thanks and I hope to see you soon.

A Brief History of Metal Detecting

In 1881 Alexander Graham Bell invented the first metal detector. As President James Garfield lay dying of an assassin’s bullet, Bell hurriedly invented a crude metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate the fatal slug. Bell’s metal detector was an electromagnetic device he called the induction balance.

Code Of Conduct

There is a general code of conduct when it comes to metal detecting; it includes things like obtaining permission from the landowner, respecting the country code and reporting all finds to the relevant authority.

This will be explained to you, so you can enjoy your hobby responsibly.

Working With the Landowner & Gaining the Correct Permission

It is important that you know who owns the land you are going to detect on and that you have their permission to do so. The Grim Sweeper will guide you on how to find landowners and also how to work with them.

This is gaining access to land without the landowner’s permission.
